Airport Zoning and Land Use Compatibility Resources

Supporting Compliant Airport Zoning and Compatible Community Development

The TDOT Aeronautics Division has developed the Airport Land Use Compatibility Guidebook, Executive Summary, Legislative Primer, and supporting resources to help Tennessee municipalities and counties understand, adopt, and maintain airport zoning regulations. These resources are intended to support compliance with Tennessee law, protect airport operations and navigable airspace, and promote compatible development around airports.

A recent TDOT review found that many jurisdictions with airport hazard areas either lack airport zoning regulations or have regulations that do not fully address statutory requirements. These resources provide guidance on airport zoning requirements, compatible land use planning, and model approaches that can help communities protect public investment in airports while supporting safe and sustainable growth.
